Manchester City’s quest for Premier League glory has hit another stumbling block as Pep Guardiola confirms a triple injury blow ahead of their crucial encounter with Aston Villa on Wednesday night.
The latest casualty is Nathan Ake, who limped off the pitch during City’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Arsenal on Sunday. Ake, handed his 20th league start, was instrumental in City’s early attempts, notably coming close to breaking the deadlock with a powerful header. However, his promising performance was cut short as he succumbed to a suspected calf injury just before the half-hour mark.
Guardiola’s defensive headache doesn’t end there. The absence of Kyle Walker and John Stones, sidelined with hamstring and groin issues respectively, has already strained City’s backline. Despite Stones making a surprise appearance on the bench against Arsenal, Guardiola confirmed that both defenders will be out for the foreseeable future, with Ake’s absence likely to be the longest.
Addressing the mounting injury concerns, Guardiola acknowledged the challenge ahead: “It is what it is. [Ake] will be longer. John will be better soon, I think. Kyle will be longer.” Despite the setbacks, Guardiola expressed confidence in his squad’s depth, praising Rico Lewis for his commendable performance as Ake’s replacement against Arsenal.
In addition to defensive woes, City’s goalkeeping department remains unsettled. First-choice goalkeeper Ederson is still recovering from a muscle injury sustained prior to the international break. Guardiola ruled out any chance of Ederson’s return against Arsenal, putting the spotlight on Stefan Ortega, who stepped in admirably in the Brazilian’s absence.
With key players such as Ake, Stones, Walker, and Ederson sidelined, Guardiola faces a selection dilemma ahead of the clash with Aston Villa. Ortega is expected to retain his place between the posts, while Lewis could feature prominently in the defensive lineup alongside Ruben Dias, Manuel Akanji, and Josko Gvardiol.
